Charlton County Superior Court Overview

Georgia uses Superior Court as the general-jurisdiction trial court. In Charlton County, Superior Court sits at the courthouse in Folkston and is part of the Waycross Judicial Circuit. The research file identifies Superior Court as the primary trial court for Charlton felony, divorce, equity, title-to-land, and higher civil matters. It is not a federal district court, and it is not the same as Probate Court, Magistrate Court, State Court, Juvenile Court, or the municipal courts in Folkston and Homeland.

Charlton County Superior Court Cases

Superior Court records can include complaints, petitions, answers, motions, orders, judgments, divorce decrees, felony accusations or indictments, arraignment entries, plea papers, verdicts, sentencing documents, bond orders, and notices of appeal. A typical case record may show the court name, case number, filing date, parties, attorneys, judge, docket entries, hearing dates, documents, disposition, and financial obligations such as fines, costs, restitution, or bond details.

Restricted details may be redacted or withheld. Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, dates of birth, minor names, protected addresses, sealed adoption records, juvenile files, mental-health materials, and restricted criminal-history information are not ordinary public release items. Georgia law favors public access, but the clerk cannot release a sealed file without authority.

Waycross Judicial Circuit

Charlton County is in the Waycross Judicial Circuit and the First Judicial Administrative District. Superior Court judges may sit across several southeast Georgia counties rather than only in Folkston. The county FAQ lists Superior Court Chief Judge Dwayne Gillis, Judge Mike DeVane, and Judge Jeff Kight, though older local FAQ material may not reflect every current circuit judge. The Supreme Court of Georgia's profile for Judge Kight noted the circuit includes Bacon, Brantley, Charlton, Coffee, Pierce, and Ware.

For records, route requests to the clerk rather than to an individual judge. Court staff can tell whether a calendar, docket, certified copy, or older file should be handled at the Suite A clerk counter, through PeachCourt account access, or through another office.

Charlton County Lower Courts
